THE government has been urged to save £1 billion and not wipe out £23 million on House prices in the borough and more than £600,000 a year in business rates by scrapping the HS2 spur.

The town's two MPs teamed up for an adjournment debate on the impact of HS2 in Parliament this afternoon.

Warrington North MP Helen Jones asked for the opportunity to raise issues about the impact the spur line from Hoo Green to Bamfurlong, cutting through Hollins Green, Rixton and Culcheth, would have.

She told the hearing in Committee Room 10 at Westminster almost 1,000 homes would be affected along the route.

Ms Jones said: "The minister has the chance to look again at this proposed route to get the line we need. If he does that he will not only be avoiding the lose of habitats and economic problems in my constituency he will be providing a better service for the region as a whole."

Meanwhile Warrington South MP David Mowat said he did not know why the spur was needed aside from a depot in Wigan, which could be placed elsewhere.

"This design was done before the upgrade to Crewe Station was decided and the necessity for this line is being diminished."

They were told no final decision had been drawn on the plans and that a decision on HS2s route would be announced in the autumn.
