FOOTBALL teams familiar with getting trounced week in, week out may consider giving up their love for the beautiful game but a new competition is offering hope.
Flaming Grill pubs the Cat & Lion, in Stretton, and the Plough, in Houghton Green, are searching for the region's worst football teams, with sponsorship to the value of £1000 on offer.
The search is part of the company's Flaming Failures campaign, which could see a Warrington team find success in adversity.
The four best 'worst' teams will be chosen from entrants across the UK to complete in a head-to-head encounter for the prize.
“There are hundreds of teams out there every week playing in Sunday League and 5-a-side competitions come rain or shine," said Cat & Lion general manager Thomas Dowse.
"We wanted to give a boost to some of those plugging away at the bottom of the table, by giving the losers a chance to win for a change.
"We’re looking for the worst of the worst. If your striker can’t hit the back of the net, or your defender spends more time on the floor than on the ball and your goalkeeper couldn’t catch a cold, let alone a ball, we want you.”
