MORE than 1000 pupils from across the town got into the Olympic spirit to mark a year until the global event in Brazil.

Road to Rio took place at Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub last Tuesday to give youngsters the chance to compete in archery, football, mini tennis, cycling, tri-golf, quad kids and orienteering events.

Organised by Warrington School Sports Partnership, the day brought together children from years 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Each school represented a country from around the world in an Olympic-style opening ceremony parade, followed by dance and gymnastic displays.

Woolston CE Aided Primary School came on top in the archery category, Oughtrington Community Primary School won the quad kids and tri-golf events, while Statham Community Primary School stormed to cycling and mini tennis success.

Bruche Primary School secured gold in football and St Peter's Catholic Primary School claimed victory in orienteering.

The partnerships's PE and school sports manager Penny Moorfield praised all involved for coming together to put on the memorable day.

"It was a fantastic day with the sun shining throughout the event," she said.

Priestley College student, and volunteer for the day, George Lomas, aged 17, expressed how pleased he was with the atmosphere.

He said: "The day was extremely friendly and good sportsmanship was shown by all players."
