A ONE minute silence was held on Sunday in memory of those who lost their lives in the Summerland tragedy including Alan Barker, from Fearnhead, and Sean Kelly, from Woolston.

The two friends died when a fire destroyed the £2m Summerland indoor entertainment and leisure complex on the Isle of Man on August 2, 1973.

The one minute silence was held at the site, which now lies derelict.

Tina Brennen, who has campaigned tirelessly to make sure the events of that day are never forgotten, said: "There were about 40 -to 45 people who gathered on the prom walkway opposite the site.

"I spoke about this being an appropriate place to hold the commemoration until we can hold it in a garden of remembrance on the now derelict site."

Tea lights were placed next to flowers donated in memory of the victims.

Stones with the names of those who died in the tragedy were also displayed next to the floral tribute.

She added: "In the space of 25 minutes, 50 men, women and children lost their lives in an inferno which swept through the leisure complex and caused the UK's biggest loss of life due to fire in peacetime since 1929.

"Only the 40th commemoration has been marked by any elected representatives here on the Isle of Man. I'm determined to mark this huge tragedy annually."
