A PADGATE man will cycle 328 miles from London to Paris in memory of his grandparents, both of whom suffered from Alzheimer’s.

Paul Edmonds’ grandparents Tommy and Joyce Edmonds, who lived on Quebec Road in Orford, both had the disease before they died in August 2014 and June 2013 respectively.

Now Paul, 38, is looking to raise £1,500 for the Alzheimer’s Society when he tackles the mammoth cycle in July.

He said: “My grandparents were great – they were very popular people and the bike ride is in honour of them.

“They’re from a generation that’s disappearing.

“We’re a very close family and it was awful that they both had it.”

Paul described his grandad as a ‘very, very funny old man’ and a ‘massive Wire fan’, and the 82-year-old used to perform on stage around the north west with his brother as the Edmonds Brothers.

Despite suffering an accident while cycling early in 2015, Paul will begin the four-day ride on July 20.

He said: “I don’t do much road biking at the moment but in spring time I want to be doing 100 miles a week.

“I got knocked off my bike early last year and I couldn’t ride for quite a bit.

“The cycle is 100 miles for three consecutive days and then 28 miles on the final day.

“The more I think about it the more daunting it seems but it’s one of those challenges that you set yourself.

“It’s a very worthwhile cause and lots of people one way or the other encounter it or have been affected by it and they need all the help they can get really.

“The care they had from Warrington Hospital was amazing and any way we can raise money for this charity is great.”
