SHOWBAR has been forced to shut its doors temporarily after a man was glassed while on a night out at the town centre hotspot.

Police were called to the nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning following a report a man had been attacked and suffered serious facial injuries.

A 22-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of GBH and he was taken into custody for questioning.

He has since been bailed pending further enquiries.

Following the incident, officers at Cheshire called for an expedited review.

The meeting took place on Thursday with officials at Warrington Borough Council agreeing to suspend the club's licence.

This is pending a full review which will take place on March 3.

Richard Spedding, community safety partnership inspector for Warrington, said: "Due to the incident at the weekend and other incidents that have taken place, the police held the position that it was necessary and recommended that the licence be suspended pending a full hearing where the facts can be fully examined and appropriate actions taken including the licensing functions to prevent crime and disorder."

A Warrington Borough Council spokesman added: “A serious incident at the Showbar between February 6 and February 7 led the police to request Warrington Council to carry out a review of the premises.

"Council members met and agreed the licence be suspended pending a more detailed review to be carried out."

On Showbar's Facebook page, the management team have vowed to come back 'bigger and better'.

The post read: "Notice to all Showbar customers owing to an incident of a serious nature on Sat February 6 in The Showbar the Cheshire Police authority along with Warrington Borough Council licensing authority have suspended our premises license until a review hearing on the 3rd of March is held.

"We will be open again ASAP and would like to apologise to all our loyal customers for the inconvenience this will cause."

A spokesman for Showbar added: "Due to an unfortunate incident at the weekend in the premises we will be closed for a short period of time to review policies and procedures.

"The safety of our staff and customers is paramount and we are working closely with the police and relative authorities to ensure we operate to the highest levels of safety and standards."
