A MIDWIFE will throw himself out of a plane from 15,000ft to raise money for mums who suffer cancer during pregnancy.

Jonathan Cliffe, who works as a midwife at Warrington Hospital, will embark on a skydive in June in order to raise money for Mummy’s Star, a charity that works with women and their families who are affected by cancer during pregnancy or in the 12 months following birth.

One in 1,000 pregnancies are affected by a cancer diagnosis, and the newly-qualified 23-year-old hopes to raise £1,000 with his skydive – which will see him jump out of a plane at 15,000ft before hurtling to Earth at a speed of 120mph.

Croft resident Jonathan said: “Cancer in pregnancy is rare but it does happen.

“Pregnancy and childbirth are often an exciting moment in a woman’s life.

“However, sadly in the lives of some women this news can be interrupted by the news of a cancer diagnosis – Mummy’s Star was specifically set up to offer support to women and their families during this time.

“Over the past few years I have been in close contact with the chair of the charity who is a true inspiration to many.

“Just recently I attended a conference at which the vital work Mummy’s Star do was showcased – I was in awe of their commitment and dedication to women and their families.

“The work they do is commendable and they deserve all the support to keep their fundamental work going strong.”

Jonathan highlighted the complications that can be caused by suffering cancer during pregnancy and the work that Mummy’s Star does to combat it.

He said: “Many expectant mothers can find their cancer symptoms can be masked by their pregnancy, assuming a breast lump is a blocked milk duct for example.

“Mummy’s Star hopes that, through raising awareness, medical professionals will consider all possibilities when a pregnant woman is presenting with potential symptoms.

“Each case is obviously very individual and Mummy’s Star encourages interdisciplinary working to ensure the most positive outcomes for mother and baby through their experience.

“The charity provides comprehensive, easy to understand information about cancer in pregnancy.

“Furthermore they offer a wide range of support, from online forums to financial grants that assist women and their families during a time of difficulty.”
