PROPOSALS for the construction of a retractable roof at Stockton Heath restaurant Ego have been submitted.

The planning application registered on April 28 sets out key details for the proposed 'awning' with sliding glass, which would cover the existing seating area outside the Mediterranean eaterie, on Walton Road.

If built it would be situated yards from Piccolino's retractable roof – although the Italian establishment is in the middle of a planning battle with the council after it was ordered to remove the structure by June 22.

Stockton Heath Parish Council has raised an objection to Ego's plans because of the possible impact on the 'character and appearance' in the area.

But Ego's management believe it would be a welcome addition to the village.

A design and access statement prepared by application agent Ashall Town Planning said the design of the roof would be 'low key'.

It added: "This is a well thought out scheme allowing customers to enjoy the Mediterranean restaurant during the colder, wetter or windier days of year, as well as in the summer months when the roof, front and sides of the structure can be retracted accordingly."

The application expires on June 22.
