GOLDEN Gates Housing Trust (GGHT) has launched its new digital library to give tenants aged 50 and over the chance to get online.

Residents will be able to access free tablet PCs, free Wifi and one-to-one support as part of the initiative.

The project, which is running until next June, aims to give those involved the skills, confidence and tools required.

It is being tipped to improve access to services in the area, while allowing tenants to save money, have fun and keep in touch with family and friends.

Kim Bate, GGHT's regeneration officer, said: "It's great helping people to get online, it's like opening up a whole new world or fun, information, connectivity and friendship.

"By visiting and working with them regularly in their homes I get to see them grow in confidence and develop new skills.

"Some have gone on to buy their own tablet, but if the internet is not for them, there is no pressure and we pass on the tablet to someone else."

Penketh Court resident Beryl Homes is one of the tenants to have benefited from support.

She said: "The digital library is a brilliant idea. Three months was just enough for me to learn the basics and it has opened up a whole new online world.

"My friends and family are just a click away on e-mail and Facebook. I had never used the internet before but using a tablet in my own home gave me the confidence I needed to get started.

"I will never look back and wish I had done it sooner."

GGHT is urging other tenants to join the digital library to get the opportunity to use the web.

Anybody aged 50 or over, who has little experience of using the internet but wants to learn, should call 452452.
