PARTS of the Town Hall in 'urgent need' of repair and refurbishment will be renovated – but anticipated costs are yet to be revealed.

Discussions are currently taking place about the plans and programme of work ahead.

A council spokesman said: "Warrington Town Hall is a historic, Grade II listed building, which we have a duty to preserve.

"It is also a working building and there is some essential work which needs to be carried out to ensure it remains a safe place to work.

"The plans we are putting in place focus solely on those areas which are in urgent need of repair and refurbishment.

"These include window replacements, roof repairs, some structural works and replacement of the building's fire alarm system.

"Given the nature of the building, this will require some specialist works and we cannot confirm at this point what the costs will be."

On September 10 residents can attend the Town Hall for a Heritage Day, which has been organised by Mayor Cllr Faisal Rashid.

Visitors will be able to learn about the history of the venue during free 45-minute tours.

Cllr Rashid (LAB – Chapelford and Old Hall) said: "I think this is a very important event – it will be nice to open up the Town Hall for people.

"So many residents pass it each day but don't really know what is inside and have not seen the building properly, so it is important to give them the opportunity to do so.

"There is so much architecture in there – I am a big fan of cultural buildings.

"Some of it needs renovating. It needs to be done as long as the budget is available.

"I also want to promote that the Town Hall is available for hire as not many people know it is. It is a great building and the lawns are beautiful."

The Town Hall can be used for events including weddings, meetings and charity functions.

To use the council chamber as part of a standard wedding package from Monday to Thursday it costs £450.

On Fridays and Saturdays the charge rises to £550.

Use of the council chamber for non-wedding events, meetings and charity functions costs £150 for up to four hours and £200 for more than four hours.

Committee room one hire is priced at £120 for up to four hours and £150 for more than four hours, while committee room two costs £100 for up to four hours and £130 for more than four hours.

The Heritage Day runs from 10am to 2pm.
