TWENTY five years on from the death of mum-of-two Veronica Anderson, the events that unfolded on the night of her murder remain a mystery.

The brutal killer of the 42-year-old has never been identified in spite of advances in DNA technology and a massive manhunt by detectives.

Police have renewed their appeal for information a quarter of a century on from the killing of the woman from Widnes whose body was found in Penketh.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "Despite extensive and exhaustive enquiries over the years, no-one has ever been convicted in connection with her death.

"Veronica’s family were left heartbroken over her death and have had to live with what happened over the past 25 years.

"Someone out there must know something about what happened that day. Anyone with any information is urged to come forward.

"Even the smallest amount of information can be crucial."

Veronica – known to many as Vera – dashed out of her home in Hadfield Close in Halton View at 10.10pm on Saturday, August 24, 1991, after receiving a mystery phone call.

This caller has never been identified.

Leaving the TV on and her purse at home, she left her seven-year-old son, Neil, with a neighbour, saying she would only be 10 minutes.

Five hours later, she was found dead at around 3am on Sunday, August 25, 1991, in her Ford Cortina car off Tannery Lane in Penketh.

It was later revealed that she had been strangled and her throat slashed.

There were no signs of a robbery or sexual assault.

The last sighting was of her talking to a man in the Crown and Cushion pub in Penketh earlier that night.

This man has never been traced.

Anyone with information has been urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
