MULTI-million pound plans to build 10 new units at the Westbrook Centre have been submitted.

Supermarket giant Asda has submitted proposals that it says will ‘secure the future’ of the Westbrook Centre to Warrington Borough Council’s planning department.

Plans for the redevelopment of the centre include new retail, leisure and restaurant units and could bring 100 jobs to the area.

Offices and shops in between the supermarket and Westbrook Library will be demolished as part of the plans with three units built in their place.

A further seven units will be built on land east of the Odeon cinema while a staff training centre will be constructed adjacent to Asda.

The plans, which will also feature a redevelopment of the petrol station and reworked car park, were first exhibited in May.

Asda said that an ‘overwhelming majority’ of respondents welcomed the proposals and ‘expressed excitement at the prospective future’ of the Westbrook Centre.

The Westbrook Centre car park will lose a total of 110 parking spaces, with units potentially opening from 6am-10pm.

Alan Jones, senior communication manager at Asda, said: “We’re excited with these proposals which will expand customer choice, update existing facilities and create new jobs and opportunities for local people.

“If approved this significant investment will help to secure the future of the centre as a key retail and leisure destination and we look forward to working positively with council officers and local stakeholders as the application progresses.”

A consultation on planning application runs until Tuesday October 25.
