THE council’s executive board is considering charging residents for the collection of green bin waste as part of austerity cuts.

A spokesman confirmed that the executive board will discuss a range of cost saving measures to protect essential services.

The council is trying to find ways to generate more income in response to funding cuts from central government.

Warrington currently has one of the lowest council tax rates in the country and faces significant Government imposed budget cuts.

The council has made savings of £92million since 2010 and is now looking to cut another £41million by 2020.

Green bins are currently collected once a fortnight and are for garden waste such as plant and grass cuttings.

Several other councils have begun charging for green waste collection, including neighbouring Halton Borough Council which charges £30 per bin per year for the service.

A spokesman said the council is not legally obliged to cover a green bin collection service and members will consider charging for the service at November’s executive board meeting.
