AS we settle into January and with everyone thinking about New Year's resolutions, I thought I'd make a wish list for our town.

Wouldn't it be good to get through 2008 without another needless death?

There were so many last year - father of three Garry Newlove, teenager Stuart Lowe who died after an attack in the town centre and homeless Malcolm Crompton who was stabbed and left to drown.

And there were many more.

I would like people appearing before our courts to get real punishments not a slap on the wrist.

We need proper deterrents if we are ever to stop the relentless tide of people who have no regard for authority.

I would like to preserve the few post offices we have left and employ more people on the counter of the Golden Square one. At least more people to actually serve instead of standing around with clipboards trying their best to look helpful.

To do something about poor, neglected Bridge Street. For the empty shops to be filled with interesting, independent local retailers.

To use some of these so called 'brown field' sites to build a town centre swimming pool.

To punish any pubs that promote cheap booze so we stop so many people getting off their heads at all hours of the day and night.

To ban any more kebab shops from opening ever... there's only so many kebabs people can eat.

To make anyone caught vandalising a bus shelter do something really demeaning like scraping chewing gum off our streets.

For supermarkets and other shops to make it easier for us all to recycle by having more bins and other in-store ideas for recycling carrier bags etc.

For Warrington Borough Council to do something about the ever-increasing potholes in our roads and the uneven death-trap pavements.

For the traffic wardens to stop ignoring people parking on double yellow lines in Bridge Street and to leave alone those who park a fraction over the white lines in car parks.

To not build any more skyscraper apartments that the average first-time buyer can't afford.

To severely punish anyone caught dropping litter.

Oh, and wouldn't it be great if Wolves could win the Challenge Cup?
