The ultimate competitor and a big-game performer, Michael Monaghan was one of the most influential individual players in any team in the NRL, taking Manly Sea Eagles to the verge of the 2007 Premiership only to be denied by Matt King's Melbourne Storm in the final. A natural half back who became one of the best hookers in Australia when he moved to accommodate the arrival of Matt Orford in the Manly side. Monaghan returns to the number seven spot for his four-year contract with Wolves starting in 2008. Playing his junior rugby with Tuggeranong Buffaloes, he came to the NRL with Canberra Raiders, debuting in 2001 and spending three seasons in the first grade before joining Manly for the 2004 season. He took over the captaincy midway into his first season at the club following the shock resignation of the club legend Steve Menzies, and helped revitalise the Sea Eagles, leading them to their first semi-final appearance for seven years in 2005. After Matt Orford signed with Manly for 2006 the Wolves targeted Monaghan as a replacement for outgoing half back Nat Wood, but Monaghan rejected the chance to leave and vowed to fight for his place in the Manly side. Replaced by Ben Kennedy as captain, Monaghan found a starting spot at hooker and proved to be a fine tackler in the middle of the field with his kicking game proving dangerous from dummy half. A durable player who rarely misses a game through injury, Monaghan is also known for his voluntary work, working with disadvantaged and disabled children, and is sure to be a major contributor to Wolves' award winning community projects.
