Town's Peacocks store to close

FASHION shop Peacocks, based in Bridge Street, has closed.

The chain was taken over by Edinburgh Woollen Mill today, Wednesday.

But they confirmed the Warrington store was one of more than 200 to close nationally.

Administrators have also now confirmed the store in Birchwood Mall has been closed and will not relocate.

Hundreds of stores will stay open but the announcement means 3,100 people will lost their jobs.

John Gorle, Usdaw National Officer said: “While this is obviously fantastic news for those workers whose jobs have been saved, it is absolutely catastrophic news for the 3,100 people now facing the dole queue and this remains one of the worst redundancy situations of recent years with Scotland being particularly hard hit.

“Usdaw will be seeking a meeting with Edinburgh Woollen Mill as soon as possible to discuss its plans for the business.”
