TWO giants of the current Warrington bowls scene will collide in an eagerly anticipated showdown at Alford Hall on Saturday.

King and Queen A and St Oswalds A will square up in the final of the Warrington and North Cheshire Bowls Association Challenge Cup, a competition they have won 10 times between them since the turn of the century.

Holders King and Queen are seeking a 12th success since their first in 1947, while their Padgate rivals are chasing a fifth crown in 11 years.

Teams, 2pm start: King & Queen A v St Oswalds A: Steve Jackson v Phil Davies, Andrew Wightman v Ray Bate, Brendan Brady v Jason Lockett, Chris Goodhand v Charlie Bebbington, John Brown v Bill Burlinson, Martin Maxfield v Ray Nevins, Steve Brown v Lee Johnstone, Larry Wells v Dave Penketh, Stephen Lea v Jim Harrison, Danny Watson v Stuart Goodwin.

Meanwhile, two Warrington bowlers are in the hunt for the Smithy Manor bowls competition £1,000 prize.

Damian Morrison and John Taylor have reached the last 16 in St Helens, scheduled for this Saturday, when matches will be played down to a winner.

Morrison will face Isle of Man’s John Kentish, while Taylor will meet Bolton’s Lee Heaton in a bid to reach the quarter finals.

Meanwhile, Alford Hall bowler Karen Galvin is celebrating after winning the Fleetwood Festival women’s singles for the second year running and the sixth time in total.

She beat Maureen Lyons of Liverpool in the final.

However Galvin missed out on a double when losing in the supplementary competition final.

Billy Stewart, of King and Queen, reached the semi finals of the main competition.

He reached the final last year.
