NEW Warrington Wolves first-team coach Richard Agar is impressed by the club’s approach to player development.

Former Wakefield and Hull boss Agar, who has this month come on board as Tony Smith’s right-hand man, gained insight at the club’s 2014-15 Under 16s Academy launch.

Thirty-six players from across the north west, including a large Warrington contingent, were welcomed to the Wolves family by head of youth, junior recruitment and development Ben Lazenby, along with Agar, player performance manager Phil Jones, under 16s coach Gary Chambers and chief executive Andy Gatcliffe.

Agar, who is also coach of France, said: “This event was a fair indication of the club’s intent and the belief in the young players, with the chief executive, directors, former players, coaching staff and scouts all in attendance.

“Having come into this from the outside, that is really impressive.

“For the players and their families it’s a really proud moment and they should all be thrilled to bits. They’ve opened up a wonderful opportunity for themselves and this is the first rung on the ladder (to a professional career).

“My message to those coming through is make the most of it. It is a wonderful opportunity, so make every day count.”

Dave Rotheram, the RFL’s head of talent and player development, added: “Shining through is the consistent message from every level of the club to the sustainability of its player development programme." I look forward to seeing the initiatives progress and the development of coaches and players for all levels of the game.”
