YOUNG hockey players are developing their skills with newly formed Lymm Beavers.

The team at Lymm Hockey Club, for players aged between 10 and 13, formed last year but played few games.

The side have now entered their first season, playing teams from all around the north west in a friendly format.

Beavers had played seven and drawn two this season before securing their first win at the weekend.

“We are making a lot of progress,” said coach Lynne Pyman.

“The two draws came against Bowdon and Timperley which are good and well established teams, while the ones we lost were close games so we are doing well.

“It’s good practice for them as well because they play games on full-size pitches.”

The Beavers’ progress was finally rewarded with a first win on Saturday.

They achieved a 4-3 success against Chester, but left their supporters biting their nails at the end.

Lymm blitzed into a seemingly unassailable 4-0 lead with three goals from Will Sutton and a breakaway effort from Ben Robinson.

However, Lymm reverted to type of not doing things the easy way.

Chester never gave up and kept pushing, scoring three goals in quick close succession in the second half.

It was end-to-end hockey and with Beavers having only 11 players at their disposal, all players were displaying tired legs.

But it was to their credit that those players gave their all to hold on for victory against an excellent team.

Player of the match chosen by the opposition was Leo Bircham, while Lymm officials gave their award to Sutton as a reward for his hat-trick of goals as well as his all-round effort.
