SHAUN Reid is determined to help Warrington Town end their 14-year trophy drought by lifting the Doodson Sport Cup.

The Yellows’ last silverware came in 2001 with the North West Counties League Second Division title, a year after beating Tetley Walker in the divisional cup final.

But Reid’s outfit face Farsley at Stockport County’s Edgeley Park next Thursday, kick off 7.45pm, in the league cup final, when the boss hopes the town will get behind them.

“It would be my first trophy as a manager and the club’s first in a very long time, so you can’t underestimate how big it is,” said Reid.

“The cliché is the crowd can be an extra man, but it’s true. If we can take a thousand over there it will be a great day.

“You can’t underestimate what they can give you and you can’t put that feeling into words – walking out to a great following.”

Town have witnessed the benefits of a swelled following already this season, with a sell-out crowd cramming into Cantilever Park to see Warrington dump Exeter City out of the FA Cup in November.

“They have been magnificent and the fan-base is growing,” added the former Rochdale midfielder.

“The FA Cup run is something we’ll all remember and hopefully we can repeat that atmosphere again at Stockport.”

Reid hopes the cup final spotlight will provide another opportunity for the club to build towards achieving promotion from Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division North next season.

“It’s a stepping stone in bringing the club forward,” said the 49-year-old. “The chairman, Toby Macormac, is a forward-thinking man and wants to win things.

“We’ve improved year by year.

“It’ll be something to build on for next season, when we want to go and win the league.”

With both finalists out of the promotion race this campaign, Town secured their final spot with a win over higher-ranked Ilkeston while Farsley knocked out Ramsbottom.

“I wouldn’t like to pick a favourite in any cup final,” explained Reid.

“We want to be prepared. We’ll make sure we’re well organised and ready to go as you don’t get many chances to win a cup final.

“We will be ready; we’ll give our all and hopefully make the town proud.”
