Warrington Wolves U19s 26 Hull FC U19s 24

Warrington Wolves produced a brilliant fightback to record a superb victory over current Academy League leaders Hull FC on Saturday at Victoria Park Arena.

Hull FC came into the game having only lost one game so far and after building up a healthy half time lead it looked as though their fine run would continue.

But the young Wolves had other ideas and a dominating second half showing gave them a deserved win.

The visitors opened the scoring in the fifth minute when a penalty put them deep into the Wolves half and good work from stand off Harry Tyson-Wilson created space.

He found prop forward Masimbaashe Matongo in support to score between the posts.

Tyson-Wilson converted and then five minutes later a short ball from Hull FC scrum half Josh Wood found loose forward Mike Fash who crashed over at the side of the posts from close range. Tyson-Wilson added the conversion.

The Wolves hit back shortly afterwards when good hands along the line saw half back pair Morgan Smith and Brad Stanway combine to find winger David Foggin-Johnston and he powered over three defenders to score a superb try in the left corner.

Then midway through the half Wolves hooker Daniel Hirst went down the blind side and found Smith, who stepped off his left foot and created room before putting centre Harvey Livett over in the right corner.

On the half hour Hull FC failed to find touch from a penalty and Wolves full back Jack Johnson collected the ball on his own 30 metre line and weaved his way through the Hull FC line on a stunning 70 metre run to leave the defenders trailing in his wake to score between the posts.

Livett converted to put his side ahead for the first time.

But Hull FC responded when a high kick from Tyson-Wilson was fumbled by Wolves and he collected the loose ball to score on the left and he added the conversion himself.

Right on the stroke of half time Hull FC increased their lead when substitute Ross Osborne crashed over at the side of the posts. Tyson-Wilson converted to make the interval score 24-14 to the Humbersiders.

The second half started with Hull FC camped in the Wolves half but some brilliant defensive work kept them at bay.

Thirteen minutes into the half Wolves had a scrum on the halfway line and from that the ball was sent out to Livett, who broke through the line and raced 50 metres to score at the right of the posts. He added the conversion to narrow the gap to four points.

Shortly after the hour mark a high kick on the last tackle by Smith was knocked back by Wolves second row James Jones into the arms of Foggin-Johnston, who broke through two attempted tackles to score between the posts.

Livett converted to put the Wolves back in front at 26-24 and that is the way it stayed as the Wolves celebrated a very hard fought success.
