LUCY Glover completed a successful first season of international racing this weekend.

The Warrington Rowing Club star wrapped things up for Great Britain with two gold-medal finishes at The Coupe de La Jeunesse in Hungary.

This is an international rowing regatta for school-age athletes and is often referred to as the European Junior Championships.

Glover was racing in a quad scull and competed on both Saturday and Sunday in separate competitions.

On the first day the crew qualified for the final by setting the fastest time in the heats.

The final was a close-run thing but the teenager inspired her crew to gold, pipping Holland and Poland to the top step of the podium.

Sunday saw the girls set the fastest qualifying time once again in the heats.

In the final, the quad eased out to a comfortable lead pushing Poland and Austria into the minor medal positions.

Glover was joined in Hungary by Alice Bowyer, who also trains regularly at Warrington Rowing Club.

Bowyer, from Parbold, was competing in the single scull and came away from the regatta with two gold medals.

It meant all Great Britain's gold medals came from products of Warrington Rowing Club.

COMPETITORS at Warrington Rowing Club's annual regatta were not hindered by the heavy showers on Saturday.

Spectators, including Deputy Mayor Cllr Faisal Rashid, who opened the new clubhouse refurbishment, were entertained by events in junior, senior and master categories.

An added bonus for winners was the presence of Olympian Richard Egington, who presented them with their medals.

The Kingsway Bridge-based rowers hosted clubs on their River Mersey course from Liverpool, Northwich, Runcorn, Salford, Trafford, Bradford, Chester, Rochdale and Shrewsbury.

There was a feast of tightly-contested races, which saw many home victories.

One of the many Warrington medallists was their up-and-coming star, Angus Stewart, who recently won a bronze medal in the J14 single sculls at the GB Junior Championships held at the Strathclyde Country Park.

Stewart tasted victory at his home regatta in the J14 quadruple sculls and in the J15 double sculls, an age category above.
