WARRINGTON Athletics Club’s Scotland and Great Britain youth international Carys McAulay helped the host nation win the Celtic Games at Grangemouth on Saturday.

Following the Commonwealth Games last year the track was uplifted from Hampden Park and relaid at Grangemouth.

McAulay moved down in distance to run in the 400m and came away with a victory in a new personal best time of 55.66secs before the weather deteriorated.

She later ran the first leg in the 4x400m relay which Scotland narrowly lost to Ireland.

However, they won the overall trophy with 170 points from Ireland and Wales.

The 17-year-old now prepares for the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa in September along with five of her teammates in Grangemouth.

“Carys was pleased with the win and she is looking forward to Samoa now,” said her mum, Victoria. “She was born in Scotland and lived here for five years before we moved to Warrington.

“She ran almost as soon as she walked and has been in athletics for years. It is a tough sport for teenagers and they have to be very dedicated.

“But she loves it and the World Youths was a wonderful experience for her.

“We went over to Colombia as a family to support and it was great watching her run three times and getting a personal best in the final to finish fourth in the 800m.”

Warrington athletes were also in action at the Inter County Championships, with James Webster, Sam Dykes and Alex Wort representing Cheshire.

In the 400m hurdles, Webster finished fourth in his heat, 55.14, but did not progress to the final.

Dykes was second in his 800m heat, 1:56:14, to qualify for the final where he clocked 1:56:05 for fifth.

Second claim member Wort was in the 110m hurdles, finishing sixth in his heat in 15:23.

Tony McCarthy took a 5000m bronze at the British Masters Athletic Championships in Birmingham, clocking 18:26:33.

Dave Gill returned with gold in the 3000m steeplechase, 12:40:91. Both were running in the over 55s.
