WARRINGTON South Wizards are celebrating winning a basketball league.

They have scooped the Year Five/Six Basketball League title at the Warrington Sport for All Centre Ball Hall in Latchford.

Wizards, formed in 2013, have worked hard, training weekly and improving every year to the pinnacle of winning the league silverware.

This feat is even more noteworthy as five of the team members have been in school year five, competing against teams one year older throughout the season.

Wizards coach Paul Morrow said: "The lads have worked hard and grown together as a team.

"It's a credit to them to win the league. They have only lost two games all season and I'm sure they will have similar successes in the future."

Basketball is a thriving sport in the town and nationally and anyone interested in joining a club should contact the Warrington Sport for All Centre (Boteler Community Sports Centre) at the Ball Hall in Latchford.

Further success is being celebrated by the club.

Warrington South Rockets have won their Year Three/Four Basketball League convincingly, losing only one game all season.

Coach Simon Baines said: "We only set the team up last year as my son didn't have one to play for.

"He asked his friends and school mates if any of them fancied having a go and eventually we had seven lads.

"From there they've progressed from having never played the game before into an amazing team who all play for each other.

"As the coach, and a parent, I couldn't be more proud of how well they've played this season and also the fair-minded spirit in which they've approached every the game.

"We now move up to the next league which is going to be an even bigger challenge, but we're looking forward to it and they'll give it their all once again."
