PHOENIX Fire’s Courtney Chadwick boxed his way to championship success on Saturday night as fighters from the club showcased their skills on a big stage.

As part of England Boxing Grassroots Boxing Extravaganza at Liverpool's Echo Arena, Chadwick defeated South Durham’s James Archer by unanimous decision to win the England Boxing North 60kg lightweight belt.

In an excellent contest Courtney used slick boxing skills to keep his very strong and aggressive opponent at bay, frequently scoring in the first round with clean counters to the head and body.

After asserting himself in the second round and putting his opponent on the back foot, Courtney saw out the final round with excellent defensive work as his opponent came forward.

Also in action was 17-year-old youth welterweight Casey Brown, who edged a split decision against John Harrison of Transport ABC in another enthralling match-up.

As his opponent advanced behind a high guard, Casey used good boxing skills to frustrate him and picked his moments with clean, concise attacks.

All three rounds followed a similar vein, with Casey’s cleaner work being rewarded by the judges.

The speed and fast hands of youth lightweight Bayode Oliueye won him a clear, unanimous points win over Aaron Bates of Impact Boxing Stoke, while Recardo Jenkins also impressed in his latest Skills outing against Derry Ponting of Bootle ABC.

The Phoenix fighters are next on show at the Eagle Sports and Social Club on Thursday, May 12, 8pm start.
