WARRINGTON was represented in the Premier League on Saturday as Everton’s Matthew Pennington made his league debut for the club, writes Matt Turner.

The Great Sankey-based 21-year-old started at centre back alongside England international John Stones in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth at Goodison Park in front of 38,345 supporters.

The former St Gregory’s High School student completed the full 90 minutes as goals from Tom Cleverley and Leighton Baines gave Roberto Martinez’s men the victory.

The former Warrington Schoolboys defender will now be hoping to keep his place in Martinez’s team for the final three games of the Premier League season, starting at newly-crowned champions Leicester City this Saturday.

Pennington represented Matthiola as a junior before signing for Everton’s academy at the age of 11.

He has made two other appearances in the Everton first team this season, but they both came in cup games.

He started the 5-3 League Cup win over Barnsley in August before coming off the bench in January’s FA Cup tie against Dagenham and Redbridge.

Until a couple of weeks ago, he had been out on loan at League One promotion-chasers Walsall before he was recalled by Everton to cover an injury crisis in their defence.

Pennington has played the vast majority of his professional football in League One after he spent much of last season on loan at Coventry City, playing 25 times and winning the club’s Young Player of the Year award.

He also enjoyed a loan spell at Tranmere Rovers in 2014, making 17 League One appearances and scoring twice for the Prenton Park outfit.

The former England Under 19s international wears squad number 38 on his blue shirt for the Toffeemen.

He signed a new three-year deal last year, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2018.
