MANY of the Warrington Wolves squad will be experiencing the Challenge Cup Final for the first time on Saturday when they walk out at Wembley.

However while backs colleagues Stefan Ratchford and Ryan Atkins will be enjoying starring roles for the second and third time respectively, Rhys Evans explains how he enjoyed a final moment of his own 11 years ago.

He featured alongside brother Ben in the curtain raiser for the 2005 final at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium in a game which ended up shaping his life.

“I played for Brynteg in the Champion Schools Final before the main game, which was a fantastic experience for me as a 12-year-old kid,” he said.

“I scored a hat-trick in that game.

“That was where the interest from Warrington started and obviously things moved on to where we are now.”

As well as Rhys crossing for a hat-trick of tries Ben was named man-of-the-match as Brynteg won.

Much like this year the main event that day also featured Hull FC as they faced Leeds for the famous trophy, although Evans says he hopes the Black and Whites do not repeat their 25-24 win.

“It’s weird Hull are there again, it has got a strange circularity to it,” he said.

“Obviously it will be a much different experience for me. I don’t think there was much of a crowd in for the schools game but Wembley will be packed when we walk out this time.

“We stayed for the final after we’d played and Hull won it with a last-minute try, fingers crossed that doesn’t happen again!”
