WOLVES displayed “character in abundance” in reaching the Super League Grand Final with an 18-10 win over St Helens, head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith said.

Tries from Kurt Gidley, Stefan Ratchford and Tom Lineham ensured Wolves a place in next Saturday’s Old Trafford showpiece against either Wigan or Hull FC.

Jonny Lomax crossed for Saints to go with three Luke Walsh goals, but Wolves held out to secure their third trip to the Theatre of Dreams.

“For my guys, I just felt like even if something went wrong, there was a real determination about them,” Smith said.

“Character is a key ingredient of rugby league and my boys have it in abundance.

“I'm delighted for the young guys in our team, Toby King really put in a strong performance and played his role well.

“Sam Wilde tackled everything, Morgan held up his end defensively and gave Clarkey the rest he needed.

“They did a good job against a big form team in the competition.”

The result secures The Wire a second major final appearance of the season and Smith says his players are excited to get another crack at silverware.

“Coaching a club like ours, you expect to have a crack at trophies and we've given ourselves another chance,” he said.

“We weren't far off at Wembley and we're excited for this one.

“We'll keep it all under wraps until we get the job done.”
