LYMM held on for an important victory against a Hull RUFC side boosted by the selections of two former Super League players.

One of them, Bureta Faraimo - the ex-Parramatta Eels, Hull FC and Castleford Tigers rugby league winger with USA international experience – crossed for a try that started the visitors’ fightback from 28-10 adrift but Lymm rebuffed the rally enough to run out 28-22 victors.

It is a win that keeps hopes alive of Lymm staying in National League Two North for a second season.

Although winning on Saturday, they dropped to 11th in the 14-team league because Preston Grasshoppers had a five-point win over Huddersfield and have four more bonus points than Lymm.

Five more league games are to come, three away and two at home, with the toughest one being this Saturday’s trip to undefeated league leaders Leeds Tykes.

Lymm director of rugby Adam Fletcher said: “I thought we were in control for most of the game. We dealt with Hull’s powerful runners and offloading game well.

“The coaching team are extremely proud of the performance. We asked for a huge effort and that's what we got.

“Hull are an excellent team with power and flair so to restrict them to three tries was pleasing.

“We feel that this level is where we belong but so do all the other teams, so we just have to keep working hard for each other to make sure we stay in the league.”

The set piece became key in Saturday’s match.

The intensity of the contest resulted in numerous penalties, with Lymm’s lineout being pitted against Hull’s scrum.

Lymm opened the scoring early when Nathan Beesley intercepted and Tom Shard converted.

Hull were next to score after the ball was moved wide for Alec Renouf to cross, converted by Reece Dean who added a penalty a few minutes later.

Lymm responded well and two Shard penalties put them back in front.

When a throw cleared a lineout Rhys Lilley was alert and secured the ball before stretching out to dab the ball over the line for a 20-10 interval lead.

Cash Chilvers sustained a bad leg injury and had to leave the field early in the second half and Hull were reduced to 14 men as a yellow card was later given for repeated infringement at the maul.

Jack Reynolds crossed after cutting inside and a Shard penalty improved the lead to 18 points.

Faraimo’s converted try reduced the deficit and another from centre Peter Hudson Kowalewicz completed the scoring.
