IN response to Liberal Democrat Cllr Ian Mark’s letter to the Guardian (June 30) regarding the EU referendum.

He states the older generation let down the young by voting to leave.

On the contrary, it was the Liberal Democrats who greatly let down the young by voting with the Tories to treble university tuition fees, leaving our young students laden with an unprecedented financial burden, this was after pledging in their manifesto to abolish all education fees.

In 2011 the education maintenance allowance was also scrapped by the Coalition Government inflicting even more hardship.

This deplorable act of deceit favoured the rich and had a significant effect on university applications while the bankers, who caused the recession at the time, continued to receive their huge bonuses.

Cllr Marks also stated a referendum shouldn’t have been called.

Why shouldn’t the people of this country have a say on something of such great national concern?

Their feeling on this was shown by the huge turnout – the largest in our history. Would he have complained about the validity of the result if it had gone the other way – I think not.

The Leave campaign suggested that our contributions to the EU could be spent on worthy causes such as the NHS and new hospitals etc.

For the Remain side to twist ‘could’ to ‘would’ is a distortion of the facts.

It is obvious to anyone that it would be up to the Government at the time to decide how this money would be spent.

But for the bullying and threats there would have been many more voting to Leave.

The people have made their democratic decision which must be respected and fully implemented.

It is now time for us all to work together to build a brighter future for everyone.
